ABI – Ankle Brachial Index Measurement
Did you know your ankles can reveal important insights about your overall health? The Ankle Brachial Index (ABI) test is a simple, non-invasive way for your doctor to assess how well your blood is flowing.
This test is commonly used to check for Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD), a condition where arteries in the arms or legs become narrowed or blocked. Reduced blood flow can limit oxygen supply to your limbs and increase the risk of serious conditions such as stroke or heart attack.
The ABI test compares the blood pressure in your ankle with the blood pressure in your arm. The results help determine whether further treatment, lifestyle changes, or medication may be needed.
When Do I Need the Test?
You may benefit from an ABI test if:
1. You Have a Higher Risk of PAD
Your risk increases with age, even if you don’t have symptoms. Consider testing if:
- You are aged 70 or older
- You are aged 50 or older and have any of the following:
- History of smoking
- Diabetes
- High blood pressure
- High cholesterol
2. You Have Symptoms of PAD
Common symptoms include:
- Leg pain when walking or climbing stairs
- Legs that feel heavy, numb, or weak
Other possible signs:
- Reduced hair growth on the legs
- One leg feeling colder than the other
- Pale or bluish skin tone
- Slow-healing sores on toes, feet, or legs
- Slower toenail growth
- Erectile difficulties (especially in men with diabetes)
3. You Have Already Been Diagnosed with PAD
Your doctor may use this test to monitor how well your current treatment is working.
